When his unpleasant older brother dies suddenly, Tom Walsingham finds himself head of the family, and master of Scadbury.

But when he returns to his childhood home, he finds the household in disorder and his brother’s young housekeeper claiming that Mr. Edmund didn’t die naturally.

Audrey Shelton, once almost betrothed to Edmund, arrives with news that the local constable is seeking a Justice of the Peace to investigate, prompted by an anonymous letter claiming ‘foul play’.

Tom dismisses Audrey’s concerns until the constable himself arrives, asking questions that all point one way: Edmund Walsingham was murdered.

Tom inspects the body, scandalising his sisters and servants, but finds no proof of violence.

Still, he realises he stands on thin ice. As Edmund’s heir, he appears to have profited most from his brother’s death.

And when another member of the household dies in suspicious circumstances, the finger of blame once more turns on Tom.
