Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander Charles Compton is ready to set off for a well-earned skiing holiday when he is suddenly recalled to take command of H.M. Submarine N27.
Due to sail to join the Tenth Submarine Flotilla in Gibraltar the next day, the current captain has gone missing.
Compton is thrown straight into the deep end. Faced with a close encounter with an ocean liner, stormy weather, and the vagaries of the old N27, he must use every ounce of his ingenuity and energy to survive.
