Will a promotion be a blessing or a curse…?
Young naval officer Paul Dexter has been lying low following his last seaborne adventure, on a period of self-imposed half-pay.
As the Admiralty have shown their displeasure at his recent behaviour, he is attempting to write a satirical novel as a new way to earn his keep. Thankfully old friend ‘Mack’ Sennett is on hand with a heavy dose of common sense to guide him back to Navy life.
Dexter’s humble return sees him posted to HMS Helpful, a fleet repair ship, staffed by Navy delinquents and Captain ‘Cautious’ Porteous — a man dedicated to paperwork and not at all typical of a successful senior officer.
As Helpful steams off for Scottish waters and then the Baltic with a submarine fleet in tow, Dexter is joined by some familiar faces to help smooth the way.
There follows a series of incidents (or accidents), most of them hilarious and all of them near-calamitous, from which it seems almost impossible that Paul Dexter should emerge unscathed.
And even if he should, is there some mischievous Fate planning new terrors for him in the shape of the redoubtable, scheming Daphne?
