Wedded bliss becomes a marital nightmare…
When Commander Paul Dexter was made Second-in-Command of HMS Redoubtable, he little realised that his newly married wife, Daphne, did not expect her social calendar to be interrupted by the fact that her husband was a naval officer and therefore seldom at home.
In fact, she expected Dexter to give up the Navy altogether and take a job in her father’s firm, which, for Paul, was out of the question.
So, on the morning he joined his ship at Portsmouth Dockyard, Dexter wasn’t feeling his best; and apart from the fact that his marriage left a lot to be desired, HMS Redoubtable wasn’t exactly the newest of ships.
She had sat in dry dock for the last two years, slowly rotting away, and she needed extensive repairs. And, of course, there were the men — not least of whom was his captain, Horatio Fitz-George Hordern, one of the original fire-eaters who expected everything and more from his crew.
Dexter had his problems, and he couldn’t decide which was the greater, his wife or his ship — both of whom, he thought, deserved the name Redoubtable…
